Question:

What entitlement do workers have to lunch and other breaks?

Answer:

There is no statutory right to a lunch break as such under the Working Time Regulations.

·         Workers are entitled to a break of at least 20 minutes in each six hour working period.

·         Adult workers are entitled to a rest period of at least 11 consecutive hours in each 24 hour working period (it is not normally acceptable to expect your staff to work to midnight to finish a project and be back at their desk for 9 am the next day)

·         Adult workers are normally entitled to an uninterrupted rest period of at least 24 hours in each seven day period of working. offered  (so think twice before you expect staff to give up their weekends).

As you will imagine, there are special rules relating to workers under the age of 18, shift, and night workers.
