Question:

What is the National Minimum Wage?

Answer:

This tends to go up every year on the 1st October. At the time of writing the National Minimum Wage was as follows:

£5.80 for workers aged 21 and over.

£4.83 for workers aged 18 to 21.

£3.57 for workers aged 16 & 17.

The new rates, which will come into force on 1st October 2010 will be:

£5.93 per hour for low paid workers aged 21 and over

£4.92 per hour for 18-20 year olds; and

£3.64 per hour for 16-17 year olds

Tips can no longer be used to top up wages to meet the NMW.
