Question:

Do employees have the right to take bank holidays as paid leave on top of their normal paid holiday?

Answer:

The Working Time Regulations (as amended) provide that workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks paid leaver per annum. For someone working 5 days a week, that equates to 28 days leave per annum. This right is inclusive of public holidays, not in addition to it.

Many employment contracts for full timers will state that holiday entitlement is 20 days plus 8 public holidays; and this reflects the current statutory entitlement.
